A pressing-plant macro film: a marbled teal and cream vinyl puck drops between chrome dies, spreads into a grooved record, has its flash trimmed off as it spins, then lands on a turntable where a raking light sweeps the grooves and the tonearm cues down.

Records are still pressed much as they were in the 1950s. A hot lump of PVC, called a puck or biscuit, is placed between two nickel stampers with the paper labels, squeezed for a few seconds under around 100 tons in a steam-heated hydraulic press, then cooled with water. The excess vinyl squeezed past the edge, the flash, is trimmed off before the record is stacked. Coloured and marbled records come from mixing pellets of different colours in the extruder, so no two swirls are alike.
